Best Resources to Learn Code

Are you interested in learning to code, but uncertain about how to get started? Coding is not only a highly marketable skill to have, but it is also easier than ever with a wide variety of online resources, many of them free. Here are the top ten resources for learning to code, as recommended by IT Accel.

1. Codeacademy

Codeacademy is arguably one of the best online resources for learning to code. Even if you are completely new to the realm of coding, you will be able to learn everything from HTML and CSS to Ruby and Python using Codeacademy’s interactive tutorials. Codeacademy is free and provides simplified lessons that are easy to comprehend.

2. Treehouse

If you’re a new coder looking to complete a specific project, Treehouse is the resource for you. While many of their courses are free, they claim that by using their paid services, a novice coder can easily learn the skills necessary to land a job as a developer. Treehouse offers a silver membership at $25/month and a gold membership at $49/month.

3. Khan Academy

Khan Academy is another resource that is well known for providing free online learning in a number of subjects. On this website, you can access video and practice lessons in coding that have been translated into multiple languages.

4. Udacity

Udacity is another free online resource that provides interactive courses in coding, ranging from instructional videos to question-and-answer lessons. Udacity primarily uses Python and is more often used for supplemental learning rather than as a beginner’s course.

5. Coursera

Also a free resource, Coursera makes the best college courses in the nation accessible to anyone with a computer. You can find a wide variety of computer science courses to help you learn to code. However, you may have to pay a fee if you are interested in obtaining certifications or taking proctored exams.

6. The CodePlayer

The CodePlayer is a free, interactive website that helps you learn coding by doing. Rather than learning more academically and simply writing out code, you can immediately get started on a project and apply your skills as you learn them.

7. OpenCourseWare Consortium

Similar to Coursera, the OpenCourseWare (OCW) Consortium makes the course materials for classes at hundreds of colleges and universities available for free online. Popularized by MIT, this is a valuable resource to any novice coder.

8. Code Avengers

If you enjoy learning interactively, Code Avengers is a great place to learn to code. After each lesson, this resource offers a mini game to help you de-stress and continue learning for longer. Code Avengers is designed for beginners, and it currently only offers lessons in CSS3, HTML5, and JavaScript.

9. Code/Racer

Code/Racer makes coding fun by turning it into a competition. Free to use, this website teaches the basics to novice coders and allows those at the intermediate and advanced levels to take part in a one-on-one race, testing your coding speed and agility. 

10. Code School

Once you’ve surpassed the beginner stage of learning to code, Code School is a great resource for expanding your skills. Code School offers in-depth lessons in four main categories: JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Ruby, and iOS.

Computer engineering integrates the field of electrical engineering and computer science.
